Westside Football Club Soon to Launch Updated Website
The start of Season 34 marks the wind down of the original Westside FC website, handcrafted and tended by our dear friend and club builder Marcus Dressel. Westside is moving to a new platform that will make it easy to organically grow the site’s architecture as the club grows and make it easy to distribute across the club the task of creating and maintaining content at the team level.

It will also make it easier for presenting highlights of current events and from our archives. We hope our new site will be a better tool for informing and communicating with our members, alumni, partners and prospects. We’d love to hear from anyone with ideas for content. Send an email to info@westsidesoccer.com.

Westside Football Club Celebrates Longstanding Supporter and Contributor - Service Friday June 17th

Margaret Branion

It is with great sadness we say farewell to longstanding Westside Football Club supporter and contributor, Margaret Branion (February 6, 1936 - April 2, 2011).  The mother of three original Westsiders (Michael, Melissa and Chrissy Branion) and the mother in law of a fourth (Bernie Barrett), passed away during the first weekend of April after a long and courageous battle with cancer.  A great supporter of Westside, Margaret was there in the early days when her children helped shape the club. Now her grandchildren are getting involved.  Margaret contributed greatly to the historic preservation of the Westside Football Club through her love of photography which has graced club publications and enhanced club celebrations for years and is a legacy to all Westsiders. Margaret leaves her children that she adored: Richard, Michael & Shawn, Melissa & Bernie, Chrissy & Carlos; and her eight grandchildren who meant everything to her Reece, Hailey, Lucas, Wesley, Gavin, Michael, Carlita and Mateo. Below are a couple of Margaret’s photo contributions from the early years.

A Memorial Service is scheduled for Friday June 17th at the Kerrisdale Community Centre (5851 West Boulevard ) from 7 to 10 pm.

Westside FC Originals Win Copa Bicentenario / Quattro Naciones Masters Tournament in Santiago, Chile

It came down to penalties in the end against the much loved hosts from the 2007 Copa Defasio tournament, Cardenal Copello of Buenos Aires. The Westside Originals prevailed in the end to win the Copa Bicentario in Santiago, Chile in their third South American tour. Having given up a 3 - 1 lead in the final and the tying goal in stoppage time, it was sweet revenge to come from behind in PKs to hoist the cup.

Westside FC Goes Down 1 - 2 to Edmonton Victoria in 2010 Western Canadian Masters Championship Final

Westside Football Club won the Over 35 Provincial Cup in May to book its first trip to the Western Canadian Masters (Over 35) Championships. Westside FC got into the final undefeated against Edmonton Victoria who had also made it in 2009 to the final of the Western Canadians and narrowly lost. As fate would have it, Edmonton went up 15 minutes in on a defensive giveaway. Westside tied it up minutes into the second half and pressed and pressed for the winner. Edmonton was awarded a PK on 80 minutes after a FK was driven into the wall and adjudged to have been handled to go up 2 - 1 and that's how it ended. Not a good day!

Rino Orsato To Start Up His Own Club, Rino’s Vancouver Soccer Club for the 2010-11 Season

Rino Orsato, a veritable institution in the Vancouver amateur soccer scene, is parting Westside Football Club and creating his own three team club for the 2010-11 season called Rino’s Vancouver Soccer Club. Since emigrating from Italy in 1956, Rino has been involved in top level amateur soccer in Vancouver with many of the top local clubs over the years. He came on as a co-sponsor of Westside FC’s flagship mens premier team in 1990 and was ever-present with his home made blackberry wine, cold cuts and buns and his infectious passion for soccer. Rino and Nicolas Kulik were instrumental in setting up Westside FC’s reserve (CAT) and U-21 teams in the late ‘90s and over the years, Rino has been a tireless recruiter of talent for Westside FC. His Westside reserve and U-21 teams have won the mens Provincial B Cup (2006) and the mens U-21 Provincial Cup (2003). Rino was the 1997 winner of Westside FC’s prestigious Jay Skelding award for dedicated and inspirational club builders and in 2005 he won BCSA’s coveted AC Sanford Award in recognition of exceptional service to soccer in British Columbia over a period of 20 years or more. The entire Westside Football Club wishes Rino and his staff and players all the best as they forge their way forward.

Westside Football Club Originals Win Their First Deryl Hughes Over-35 Provincial Cup
The Westside FC Originals met Delta United in the Over 35 Provincial Cup final at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria Sunday May 16th and narrowly defeated them in overtime, 2 - 1, in a wide open battle. The win was especially gratifying because the team had two other times recently made it to the final - last season, 2009, as well as in 2006 - but had never closed the deal. Westside goals came from Colin Pettingale and Arthur Dahl. Both were set up by Mike Mosher. Rookie Keith Moore was selected by BCSA as the MVP of the final.

Westside Football Club Knights Win VMSL Masters B Cup and Div 2A League Title Double
Losing only one game all season in league and cup play and allowing only 11 goals over 22 league and cup games was a fantastic achievement for the Knights in their first season in Over 35s. The Knights edged out the Westside FC Rangers for the league title and in the cup final this season just as the Rangers did to the Westside FC Originals last season. The Knights move up to Masters Division 1 next season.

Westside Football Club Storm Cup Run Ends in MWSL Div 3 Cup Final
The Storm had another strong season and cup run. Despite a very strong showing in the final in which they notched twice, they were unable to bring home the hardware.

Westside FC Rino U-21 have yet again qualified for the Doug Day Cup that they won in 2003 and lost in the final in 2007.

Westside Football Club Originals Win Masters Div 2B League Title and Promotion
The Westside FC Originals won their division title for the third time in their 4 year existence since spinning off from the Westside masters premier squad, but this time, with the abandonment of the CAT system between masters sides for 2009-10, they are eligible for promotion to Masters Division 1. The Originals narrowly edged out the Westside FC Bulldogs as Westside masters teams finished 1 and 2 in both Masters Divisions 2A and 2B.

The amazing Kelli Glass passed away at 6:15 pm on Christmas Eve. Welcome Three New Club Directors  +  Thank You Katey and Doug!
Many thanks to outgoing Directors Doug Johnston and Katey Grist and welcome to new Directors Rob Dressel (who also served during the 90's), Ashley McGhee and Amélie Mercier elected at the recent AGM.

Special thanks is due both Katey and Doug. Katey spent 3 years as a Director and championed the Annual Awards Banquet each of those 3 years and provided an invaluable legal perspective as the Westside Football Club Scholarship Trust was introduced.

Doug Johnston was absolutely tireless during 26 years of continuous service to the club. Doug served on the club executive for the past 11 years and championed the Kids Help Phone Youth Soccer Jamboree for the last 10 of those. Doug coached Westside teams for over 20 years. He was first recruited by his younger brothers to take the helm when the club won promotion to the VMSL premiership for the 1983-84 season. He picked up 3 Provincial Championships and 2 National Championships along the way. After a well deserved year off in 1997-98, Doug was recruited to start a new womens U21 program. In 2002-03 Doug took the helm of the womens premier team upon the retirement of their inaugural coach. When the mens team was unfortunately relegated in 2005-06, Doug was brought back to the mens side to successfully reclaim a premiership berth on the first try and stay on to keep the team up in their first year back before once again hanging them up. For how long, we'll see!

Westside FC Shooters Take Bronze Medal at World Masters Games in Australia

The Westside FC Shooters competed at the World Masters Games in Sydney, Australia this October with a team consisting mostly of Westside FC Shooters but bolstered by friends from Semiahmoo, Wickham, Surrey and Calgary. 20 teams were entered in the women’s competitive 30-35 age division from Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada and Guam. The tournament entailed 7 games in 7 days with the Shooters going 3 and 1 in the round robin phase. The quarters, the semis and the medal game all took place within a 28 hour period! In the quarterfinal match vs. the Rebels (of Ontario) the shooters prevailed 1-0, before losing 0-1 later that same afternoon to the Oregon Brew in the semis. The Shooters were victorious in the Bronze medal match the next morning vs. Southern United (of Australia) winning 2-1 on goals from Sophie Dhanani and Maleena Pardhan. The game was a bit of a “grudge match” as Southern United was the team that had served up the Shooters only defeat in the round robin phase. The next World Masters Games will be held in Torino, Italy in August 2013 and the Shooters are already planning for it! For more information about the Shooters’ experience in Australia visit www.westsideshooters.com

Westside Football Club Announces the 2009 Mike Pettingale Memorial Scholarship Winner

On July 11, 2009, founding Westsider Don Johnston announced, on behalf of the scholarship selection committee, the second ever Mike Pettingale Memorial Scholarship winner. Once again, there were many strong applicants. This year's winner, Shanay Sangha, stood out for her camaraderie, community and character ... her  living of the values to which Westside Football Club aspires. She displayed a remarkable energy level and maturity in her studies and her community service through high school. Graduating from the Vancouver GU18 metro team, Shanay is touted to become a force in College footy as she joins the Kwantlen College womens soccer program. Given her metro, high school and tournament soccer success to date, this seems pretty likely.
