Westside Football Club Soon to
Launch Updated Website
The start of Season 34 marks the wind down of the original
Westside FC website, handcrafted and tended by our dear
friend and club builder Marcus Dressel. Westside is moving
to a new platform that will make it easy to organically grow
the site’s architecture as the club grows and make it easy
to distribute across the club the task of creating and
maintaining content at the team level.
It will also make it easier for presenting highlights of
current events and from our archives. We hope our new site
will be a better tool for informing and communicating with
our members, alumni, partners and prospects. We’d love to
hear from anyone with ideas for content. Send an email to
info@westsidesoccer.com.

It is with great sadness we say farewell to longstanding Westside Football Club
supporter and contributor, Margaret Branion (February 6, 1936 - April 2, 2011).
The mother of three original Westsiders (Michael, Melissa and Chrissy Branion)
and the mother in law of a fourth (Bernie Barrett), passed away during the first
weekend of April after a long and courageous battle with cancer. A great
supporter of Westside, Margaret was there in the early days when her children
helped shape the club. Now her grandchildren are getting involved. Margaret
contributed greatly to the historic preservation of the Westside Football Club
through her love of photography which has graced club publications and enhanced
club celebrations for years and is a legacy to all Westsiders. Margaret leaves
her children that she adored: Richard, Michael & Shawn, Melissa & Bernie,
Chrissy & Carlos; and her eight grandchildren who meant everything to her Reece,
Hailey, Lucas, Wesley, Gavin, Michael, Carlita and Mateo. Below are a couple of
Margaret’s photo contributions from the early years.
A Memorial Service is scheduled for Friday June 17th
at the Kerrisdale Community Centre (5851 West Boulevard ) from 7 to 10 pm.

Calling all graduating grade 12 soccer players! Westside Football Club will be

It came down to penalties in the end against the much loved hosts from the 2007
Copa Defasio tournament, Cardenal Copello of Buenos Aires. The Westside
Originals prevailed in the end to win the Copa Bicentario in Santiago, Chile in
their third South American tour. Having given up a 3 - 1 lead in the final and
the tying goal in stoppage time, it was sweet revenge to come from behind in PKs
to hoist the cup.
The introductory tournament is great day at the park for young soccer
families from across the lower mainland.
Thanks are due the numerous club volunteers who make this event
possible. Special thanks go out to our flagship charity partner since 1995, the
Kids Help Phone whose support network donate much
of the concession - Safeway, Starbucks, Neptune Foods. Last but least, thanks go
out to our perennial academy sponsor TSS. More info
HERE. This year the tournament raised $6,500 for
the Kids Help Phone and $2,200 for
Westside FC Scholarship Trust.
Westside Football Club won the Over 35
Provincial Cup in May to book its first trip to the Western
Canadian Masters (Over 35) Championships. Westside FC got into the final
undefeated against
Edmonton Victoria who had also made it in 2009 to the final of
the Western Canadians and narrowly lost. As fate would have it, Edmonton went up 15
minutes in on a defensive giveaway. Westside tied it up minutes into the second
half and pressed and pressed for the winner. Edmonton was awarded a PK
on 80 minutes after a FK was driven into the wall and adjudged to have been
handled to go up 2 - 1 and that's how it ended. Not a good day!

Rino
Orsato, a veritable institution in the Vancouver amateur soccer
scene, is parting Westside Football Club and creating his own
three team club for the 2010-11 season called Rino’s Vancouver
Soccer Club. Since emigrating from Italy in 1956, Rino has been
involved in top level amateur soccer in Vancouver with many of
the top local clubs over the years. He came on as a co-sponsor of
Westside FC’s flagship mens premier team in 1990 and was
ever-present with his home made blackberry wine, cold cuts and
buns and his infectious passion for soccer. Rino and Nicolas
Kulik were instrumental in setting up Westside FC’s reserve
(CAT) and U-21 teams in the late ‘90s and over the years, Rino
has been a tireless recruiter of talent for Westside FC. His
Westside reserve and U-21 teams have won the mens Provincial B
Cup (2006) and the mens U-21 Provincial Cup (2003). Rino was the
1997 winner of Westside FC’s prestigious Jay Skelding award for
dedicated and inspirational club builders and in 2005 he won
BCSA’s coveted AC Sanford Award in recognition of exceptional
service to soccer in British Columbia over a period of 20 years
or more. The entire Westside Football Club wishes Rino and his
staff and players all the best as they forge their way forward.

With great pleasure, Westside FC announces a new scholarship in honour and in
memory of the Devil we call Kelli. With the introduction of the Kelli Glass
Memorial Scholarship, Westside is designating the Mike Pettingale Memorial
Scholarship a male award and the new Kelli Glass Memorial Scholarship a female
award. Applications for the inaugural Kelli Glass are due May 1, 2010 and the
winner will be announced May 29, 2010 at the club's annual
Awards Night. All the details and the application
forms can be found HERE.
The amazing Kelli Glass passed away at 6:15 pm on Christmas Eve. Feisty and full
of life, Kelli remained ever positive, happy within herself, and so strong as
she went about her cancer battle, not letting it get in the way of living every
magical day to its fullest. She will be desperately missed. Check back in the
coming weeks for a full page tribute to this cherished club founder.
Doug Johnston was absolutely tireless during 26 years of
continuous service to the club. Doug served on the club executive for the past
11 years and championed the Kids Help Phone Youth
Soccer Jamboree for the last 10 of those. Doug coached Westside teams for
over 20 years. He was first recruited by his younger brothers to take the helm
when the club won promotion to the VMSL premiership for the 1983-84 season. He
picked up 3 Provincial Championships and 2 National Championships along the way.
After a well deserved year off in 1997-98, Doug was recruited to start a new
womens U21 program. In 2002-03 Doug took the helm of the womens premier team
upon the retirement of their inaugural coach. When the mens team was
unfortunately relegated in 2005-06, Doug was brought back to the mens side to
successfully reclaim a premiership berth on the first try and stay on to keep
the team up in their first year back before once again hanging them up. For how
long, we'll see!
