Westside FC Red Devils Report That Kelli Has Gone On Ahead to Set Up Camp

The amazing Kelli Glass passed away at 6:15 pm on Christmas Eve. Feisty and full of life, Kelli remained ever positive, happy within herself, and so strong as she went about her cancer battle, not letting it get in the way of living every magical day to its fullest. She will be desperately missed. Check back in the coming weeks for a full page tribute to this cherished club founder.

Welcome Three New Club Directors  +  Thank You Katey and Doug!
Many thanks to outgoing Directors Doug Johnston and Katey Grist and welcome to new Directors Rob Dressel (who also served during the 90's), Ashley McGhee and Amélie Mercier elected at the recent AGM.

Special thanks is due both Katey and Doug. Katey spent 3 years as a Director and championed the Annual Awards Banquet each of those 3 years and provided an invaluable legal perspective as the Westside Football Club Scholarship Trust was introduced.

Doug Johnston was absolutely tireless during 26 years of continuous service to the club. Doug served on the club executive for the past 11 years and championed the Kids Help Phone Youth Soccer Jamboree for the last 10 of those. Doug coached Westside teams for over 20 years. He was first recruited by his younger brothers to take the helm when the club won promotion to the VMSL premiership for the 1983-84 season. He picked up 3 Provincial Championships and 2 National Championships along the way. After a well deserved year off in 1997-98, Doug was recruited to start a new womens U21 program. In 2002-03 Doug took the helm of the womens premier team upon the retirement of their inaugural coach. When the mens team was unfortunately relegated in 2005-06, Doug was brought back to the mens side to successfully reclaim a premiership berth on the first try and stay on to keep the team up in their first year back before once again hanging them up. For how long, we'll see!

Westside FC Shooters Take Bronze Medal at World Masters Games in Australia

The Westside FC Shooters competed at the World Masters Games in Sydney, Australia this October with a team consisting mostly of Westside FC Shooters but bolstered by friends from Semiahmoo, Wickham, Surrey and Calgary. 20 teams were entered in the women’s competitive 30-35 age division from Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada and Guam. The tournament entailed 7 games in 7 days with the Shooters going 3 and 1 in the round robin phase. The quarters, the semis and the medal game all took place within a 28 hour period! In the quarterfinal match vs. the Rebels (of Ontario) the shooters prevailed 1-0, before losing 0-1 later that same afternoon to the Oregon Brew in the semis. The Shooters were victorious in the Bronze medal match the next morning vs. Southern United (of Australia) winning 2-1 on goals from Sophie Dhanani and Maleena Pardhan. The game was a bit of a “grudge match” as Southern United was the team that had served up the Shooters only defeat in the round robin phase. The next World Masters Games will be held in Torino, Italy in August 2013 and the Shooters are already planning for it! For more information about the Shooters’ experience in Australia visit www.westsideshooters.com

Westside Football Club Announces the 2009 Mike Pettingale Memorial Scholarship Winner

On July 11, 2009, founding Westsider Don Johnston announced, on behalf of the scholarship selection committee, the second ever Mike Pettingale Memorial Scholarship winner. Once again, there were many strong applicants. This year's winner, Shanay Sangha, stood out for her camaraderie, community and character ... her  living of the values to which Westside Football Club aspires. She displayed a remarkable energy level and maturity in her studies and her community service through high school. Graduating from the Vancouver GU18 metro team, Shanay is touted to become a force in College footy as she joins the Kwantlen College womens soccer program. Given her metro, high school and tournament soccer success to date, this seems pretty likely.

While there are too many accolades to list, Peter is recognized for being one of the key drivers of the club's early expansion, running the infamous clubhouse in the 80's, coaching the Red Devils, being a big part of the charity youth tournament, serving as club president, coaching the masters premier squad and his ongoing role as the club CIO.

Westside Football Club Shooters Win MWSL Classics Gold League and Cup Double
After edging out perrenial title winners, the Meralomas, by a point over the season to take Westside's 1st ever MWSL Classics Gold League Title, the Westside FC Shooters defeated Semiahmoo Supra 4 - 3 to take Westside's first ever MWSL Classics Gold Cup. After being double runners up last year, the Shooters stepped it up yet another notch in their third season in Classics to do the double!

Westside Football Club Rangers Win VMSL Masters B Cup and Div 2B League Title Double
Losing one game all season in league and cup play was a fantastic achievement for the oft understaffed "young" Rangers. The fact that the league and cup bridesmaids were the geriatric Westside FC Originals B made it even funner.
