The Marcus Dressel Legacy

Westside Football Club is reeling with the tragic premature passing of long-time club builder and goalkeeper Marcus Dressel after a valiant battle with cancer.

In 1990 Marcus followed his big brother Rob into the ranks of the Westside Knights as "little Dressel". Over the next 17 years, he played in the nets and sometimes out with the Knights, B-Men, Rangers and O-Men. He laced up for Wild Wild Westside in the UBC Co-Ed league! And he met and married Westside Renegade Kristina Dressel (nee Stuart)! The large club of Westside provided the platform for Marcus to connect his passion for photography with his love of the game. He created a club photographer role and eventually became the de facto league photographer as well through TTP. Make that leagues! Mens and Womens. Westside was also a platform for Marcus' passion for new media. He was the design and content champion who made sure Westside had a living breathing online presence.

The Marcus Dressel Award - "Keeper" of the Year

Established in 2007, in honour of Westside Football Club builder and keeper Marcus Dressel and awarded annually to the member, family or friend who best captures the spirit of Westside in still photography.

Why a photo of the year award? (especially versus a goalkeeper of the year award?)

The first thought was to introduce a goalkeeper award, but it seemed problematic to limit such a prestigious award to the 20 odd keepers every year. And last season (2006-07), 7 of 16 MVP awards went to goalkeepers! Everyone in the club plays a position. A photo award is a fitting way to commemorate one of Marcus' unique contributions to Westside Football Club.

Even in his absence, we hope Marcus will be continuing to drive club photography ;-)

The club benefits the more photos are taken and sent in. The annual unveiling of finalists and their top submissions will be a fun addition to awards night and a fitting annual tribute to Marcus. And such an award carries on Marcus' legacy of bringing us together through pictures of us "at play" - especially since we can’t be everywhere with such a big club

Start clicking! And sifting through your Westside pictures ...

Email submissions to info@westsidesoccer.com by May 15!

The first winner will be announced at our 30th annual awards banquet on May 31st, 2008 at the Heritage Hall.

My Dad's Efforts Really Were Appreciated By His Soccer Club!

The heartbreaking circumstances of Marcus' passing at a time when he was just entering such an exciting period as a new dad allow Westside the opportunity to attempt to show his daughter Katelyn how much Marcus meant to so many Westsiders.
